Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell scored a stunning century for the Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket on June 17.
Glenn Maxwell rescues Washington Freedom with century from No.6
In the eighth game of the 2025 season at the Oakland Coliseum, Washington skipper Maxwell elected to bat first against the LA Knight Riders. Openers Mitchell Owen and Rachin Ravindra were dismissed in the first three overs, but only after the score read 45. By the 12th over, they were reduced to 92-5 an in danger of falling away.
At that point, Obus Pienaar joined Maxwell, who had come in at 68-4 and was on nine off 12 balls at the time. In trademark Maxwell fashion, the Australia international began to take on the bowling, hitting compatriot Tanveer Sangha for three sixes in a row in the 14th over.
That seems to get him going, as Maxwell hit two more off Corne Dry two overs later, before sending three Sunil Narine deliveries into the stands. He reached a half-century off 29 balls, and continued to torment the LA attack, smashing 10 sixes before he scored his first four, off Andre Russell in the 19th over.
Maxwell completed his eighth T20 century in the final over, where he bludgeoned three more sixes off Jason Holder. All told, he hit 13 sixes and two fours as the three-figure mark came up off 48 balls. The sixth-wicket partnership was worth 116, of which Maxwell contributed 97 and Pienaar just 14. Washington finished on 208-5, before the bowlers stepped up to bowl LA out for just 95 and secure a 113-run win.
Only four players – Chris Gayle (22), Babar Azam (11), Virat Kohli (9) and Rilee Rossouw (9) – have scored more T20 centuries than Maxwell, not mean feat for a player who bats primarily in the middle-order. In fact, this was Maxwell's sixth T20 century from No.4 or lower, helping him extend a world record he already held. David Miller and Suryakumar Yadav have scored four each from No.4 or lower.
His 13 sixes also equalled a world record in a T20 innings from No.6 or below.
