Shai Hope scored his second Test hundred in three innings to move on from an eight-year century drought in style.

Shai Hope hits second century in three innings

Hope brought up his fourth Test century in the ongoing Christchurch Test against New Zealand to add to a ton in the Delhi Test against India in his last outing in the format. He also scored a half-century in the first innings of the game in Christchurch, meaning he has scored three 50+ scores in as many innings. Notably, he hadn’t gotten to three figures in Tests before the match in Delhi since hitting twin centuries against England in Leeds in 2017. He also didn't play a Test for nearly four years between 2021 and 2025.

Roston Chase won the toss and put New Zealand in to bat in Christchurch. A combined bowling effort saw all of their bowlers all in the wickets column, with Kemar Roach, Jayden Seales, debutant Ojay Shields and Justin Greaves bagging two apiece to restrict the hosts to 231.

But the West Indies batters failed to make it count, with Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Shai Hope the only two to cross the 50-run mark in their first innings, while seven of the other nine were unable to get into double digits. They folded for 167 and, riding on Tom Latham and Rachin Ravindra’s hundreds, New Zealand posted an improbable 531 to chase for the visitors.

Hope walked in following Chanderpaul’s dismissal in the second innings, with their team struggling at 25-2, and further slumped to 72-4. He, however, joined-up with Justin Greaves to add 140 runs for the fifth wicket and remained unbeaten at stumps on day four, still needing 319 to win.

In the process, Hope completed his fourth Test hundred while Greaves got his second fifty in the format. The two were in the runs in the second innings of the Delhi Test as well, with Hope slamming a ton and Greaves his maiden half-century while following on.

West Indies are scheduled to play two more Tests on their tour of New Zealand, starting December 10 and 18, in Wellington and Mount Maunganui, respectively.
