John Campbell

The West Indies have recalled John Campbell to their ODI squad for the upcoming series in New Zealand.

West Indies recall John Campbell

John Campbell has earned a call-up to the West Indies squad for the three ODIs in New Zealand, to be played between November 16 and 22. He will replace Brandon King, who, to quote the West Indies Cricket Board release, “has been omitted following a decline in form”.

The selectors have also included Matthew Forde, who missed the T20Is due to an injury, along with Johann Layne and Shamar Springer. Layne has played a Test and Springer T20Is, but neither has played an ODI. They will do the bulk of the fast bowling in the absence of Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Ramon Simmonds, and Jediah Blades, all of whom have been ruled out due to injuries.

Campbell showed gumption when he batted for more than four hours after India had asked the West Indies to follow-on in the Delhi Test last year. He added 177 for the fourth wicket with Shai Hope (103) to help the visitors avoid the innings defeat.

Campbell last played an ODI back in 2019, in an ODI tournament in Ireland that also featured Bangladesh. In that game, Campbell (179 in 137 balls) and Hope (170 in 152) added 365 for the opening stand, the highest opening partnership and the second-highest partnership for any wicket in men’s ODIs.

At this point, Campbell holds the world record for the highest score in one’s last men’s ODI. If he gets a game (and does not score 162), the record will return to James Marshall (161 against Ireland at Aberdeen in 2008).
