Liam Dawson slammed a career-best 116-ball 142 to go with two wickets to help Hampshire beat Yorkshire and qualify for the final of the 2025 One Day Cup.
Liam Dawson hits first List A ton in six years
Hampshire rode on Dawson’s first List A hundred in six years to post 304-6 after Yorkshire captain Dom Bess won the toss and opted to field at the North Marine Road Ground in Scarborough.
Dawson walked out after Matt Milnes (3-73) – who hit the headlines with his seven-wicket haul against Sussex – reduced Hampshire to 53-3, which soon became 78-4. By then, Ben Cliff had dropped Dawson off his own bowling. Dawson, on six at that point, launched a counterattack that did not stop even after he lost the teenaged Ben Mayes (37 in 51 balls, two fours, two sixes) after an 89-run stand.
As Scott Currie joined in the assault, Dawson took 103 balls to reach his fourth List A hundred, and accelerated thereafter, eventually falling for a 116-ball 142 that included 13 fours and seven sixes. Currie, meanwhile, reached his maiden List A fifty off only 35 balls and remained unbeaten on a 40-ball 61 (nine fours). Hampshire added 124 in the last ten overs (including 75 in the last five), losing only Dawson’s wicket.
Dawson’s last List A hundred – 108 for Hampshire against Surrey at The Oval – had come in 2019. His previous career-best score was 113 not out had come in the 2014/15 Dhaka Premier Division, for Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club against Kala Bagan Krira Chakra at Savar.
Imam-ul-Haq (105 in 97 balls, 15 fours) continued with his excellent form to lead the Yorkshire response. Yorkshire were in control at 146-1 in the 28th over. When rain stopped play, they were 171-3 in the 31st over. When play resumed, their target was adjusted to 254 in 41 overs – which would have been less had they not lost the two wickets.
At this point, Imam slipped while attempting a run, and Eddie Jack ran him out from mid-wicket. Off the next ball, Currie removed Finlay Bean – all this, before Yorkshire could add to their total. George Hill and Harry Duke put on 36 in 21 balls, but now Dawson stepped up to break that stand. Dawson also got Milnes to finish with 2-55 as Yorkshire fell 18 runs short.
Hampshire will face Worcestershire in the final at Trent Bridge on September 20.
