Khurram Shahzad of Worcestershire bowls during the Vitality T20 Blast match between Worcestershire Rapids and Nottinghamshire Outlaws at Visit Worcestershire New Road in Worcester, England, on July 17, 2025

Pakistan seamer Khurram Shahzad helped Worcestershire defend four runs in the final over of a nail-biting tie against Notts in their 2025 One-Day Cup match.

Shahzad, who had conceded 60 runs off his nine overs without success, was entrusted with the final over of the match. Notts Outlaws, nine down, needed four runs to win. Shahzad opted to bowl fuller deliveries targeting the stumps. The Notts batters took two singles off the first three deliveries, reducing the equation to two runs off three balls.

The fourth delivery, intended as a yorker, ended up as a low full toss, but Notts' No. 10 Brett Hutton could only hit it straight to mid-on, failing to take a single. The penultimate delivery was a yorker, and Hutton dug it out to the off side – straight to the fielder – leaving two required off the last ball.

Shahzad, having targeted the stumps throughout, changed tactics on the final ball, bowling it fuller and wider outside the off stump to stay away from Hutton’s hitting arc. Hutton swung wildly and missed before scrambling for a run. Wicketkeeper Henry Cullen attempted to run him out at the non-striker’s end, but the throw hit Hutton and deflected to the leg side, allowing the batters to complete the single. The match ended in a tie.

Worcestershire posted 312-7 in 47.1 overs, powered by twin centuries from captain Jake Libby and Kashif Ali, before rain interrupted play. Nottinghamshire were then set a revised target of 327 in 47 overs under the DLS method.
