Michael Vaughan’s teenage son Archie struck a career-best 95 to help Somerset defeat Yorkshire in the 2025 One-Day Cup on Thursday (August 14).
Archie Vaughan falls five short of maiden professional ton
At the Clifton Park Ground in York, Yorkshire found themselves in early trouble after being put in to bat first, slumping to 28-3. Matthew Revis, coming in at No.5, tried to stabilise the innings with a run-a-ball 85, but Yorkshire collapsed to 204-8. Dan Moriarty (30* from No. 10) helped the hosts put together 247 before they were bowled out. Jake Ball (4-34) was the chief destroyer for Somerset.
Chasing the paltry score, Archie Vaughan gave Somerset a solid start, reaching his fifty off 65 balls. He continued confidently after the milestone and was closing in on his maiden professional century. However, on 95, he charged at opposition captain and spinner Dom Bess, attempting to bring up his hundred in style. But Vaughan missed the ball, which crashed into the stumps.

Captain James Rew remained unbeaten on 53 off 62, taking Somerset home in 49.1 overs with six wickets remaining.
Having made his senior debut for Somerset last year, this was Vaughan’s second consecutive List A fifty. Four days earlier, against Lancashire, he scored 59 off 93 balls – a slower innings featuring just three fours – while also contributing 2-41 with his off-spin, albeit in a losing cause.
Vaughan, 19, listed as a batting all-rounder, has also played 15 first-class matches so far, scoring 580 runs at 26.36 and taking 26 wickets at 33.96.
His maiden first-class fifty was a 68 against Lancashire last season, with the recent one being an 80 against Sussex in May. His two five-wicket hauls – 6-102 and 5-38 – both came in a single County Championship match against Surrey last year.
Vaughan was part of England Under-19s' squad for their Youth Test series against India in July. He played the first match, claiming 6-84 in a drawn contest. His other six-wicket haul (6-19) came against South Africa Under-19s in February, making him only the second English bowler to achieve two six-fors in Youth Tests.
