Babar Azam equalled Saeed Anwar’s record for the most ODI hundreds for Pakistan with his ton against Sri Lanka on Friday, November 14.

Babar Azam goes past Brian Lara, Joe Root and Mahela Jayawardene

Babar, with his 102 not out off 119 balls in the second ODI against Sri Lanka, overtook Brian Lara, Joe Root and Mahela Jayawardene in the list of batters with the most men's ODI hundreds. He also joined Saeed Anwar as the Pakistan batter with the most tons in the format.

Chasing 289 in Rawalpindi, Pakistan lost Saim Ayub in the last over of the first powerplay with 77 on the board. Babar then joined hands with Fakhar Zaman to add 100 runs for the second wicket before the latter perished for 78.

But he, along with Mohammad Rizwan, ensured there were no hiccups as Pakistan chased down the target with eight wickets and 10 balls to spare to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Babar finished unbeaten on 102, his first hundred in 83 international matches across format. It was also his 20th century in ODIs, which took him to joint-16th in the overall list.

Babar's last ton in international cricket was his 151-run knock against Nepal in the 2023 Asia Cup. Another hundred in the format will put him level with Herschelle Gibbs and Ross Taylor on the all-time list.
