Jammu and Kashmir stitched a record five century stands in their ongoing Ranji Trophy game against Himachal Pradesh in Amtar.
Having restricted Himachal to a lowly 168 on the first day, J&K amassed a massive 771 to take a 603-run first-innings lead. They posted the huge total on the back of five partnerships worth over a hundred runs, while seven of their batters crossed the 50-run mark, with three getting into triple figures.
Their opening partnership didn’t last long, as Shubham Khajuria fell in the 6th over for 21 runs. His opening partner Yawer Hassan was dismissed after a 54-run stand with Shubham Pundir, who went on to score 165.
Pundir had two century partnerships, first with captain Paras Dogra (52) for the third wicket and then with Abdul Samad (61) for the fourth. He also added 75 runs with Kanhaiya Wadhawan before becoming the fifth wicket to fall for 373 runs.
Wadhawan (110) then stitched together a 110-run stand with Abid Mushtaq (177) for the seventh wicket, with both batters also scoring respective hundreds. Mushtaq enjoyed two more century partnerships, first with Auqib Nabi for the eighth wicket before a 125-run stand with Yudhvir Singh for the ninth.
Jammu & Kashmir record 80-year Ranji Trophy first
This was the first time since the 1945/46 Ranji Trophy season that a team had five or more century stands in an innings. That season, Holkar had seven 100+ partnerships in the semifinal against Mysore, played in Indore. Before that, Maharashtra held the record for the most century partnerships in all first-class cricket in India, with five such stands in the 1940/41 semifinal against Northern India in Pune (then Poona).
Overall, there have been only seven instances of a team stitching five or more century stands in an innings of a first-class match, and just two, before J&K, in India. This was also the seventh instance of a team having seven of their batters cross the 50-run mark in first-class cricket in India.
