Akash Deep registered a five-wicket haul to help Bengal dismiss Haryana cheaply in their ongoing Ranji Trophy match in Lahli.
Akash Deep and Shahbaz Ahmed pick up a five-for each to help Bengal take first-innings lead
Bengal, who have already qualified for the quarterfinals, batted first in the game, but could only score 193. A 61-run opening stand between Abhimanyu Easwaran (26) and Sudip Chatterjee (86) set the ball rolling for them, but none of the other batters could cross the 20-run mark.
Akash Deep and Shahbaz Ahmed together ensured that Haryana didn’t run away with the game, bowling them out for 100 runs and picking up a five-for each. The pacer began the proceedings, removing opener Ankit Kumar in the second over before dismissing Ashish Siwach in the fourth.
A 33-run third-wicket partnership stabilised Haryana’s innings, but Shahbaz, with his left-arm spin, struck in the 14th over, which triggered a collapse. From 43-2, Haryana were soon reduced to 63-7, with Akash Deep and Shahbaz running riot.
The north Indian side were bowled out for 100 in the 32nd over as Deep sent down 15 overs unchanged to complete a seventh five-wicket haul in first-class cricket, returning figures of 5-40. He took his tally to 18 wickets in four Ranji Trophy games this season. It was Shahbaz’s seventh five-for in the format as well, and he now has 34 wickets in the ongoing campaign.
Bengal have since had a much more controlled second innings, with Easwaran and Sudip Kumar Gharami steadying the ship after Chatterjee’s early dismissal. At the time of writing, Gharami had completed his half-century while the opener was going strong at 40, with Bengal at 112-1 in 26 overs, and half a session left in the second day’s play.
