Joburg Super Kings wicketkeeper Donavan Ferreira dismissed Heinrich Klaasen after switching to bowling off-spin mid-innings during his side's SA20 clash against Durban Super Giants on December 30.
Ferreira, who was named JSK’s wicketkeeper in the teamsheet at the toss, carried out his routine duties at the start of the innings. He kept wicket for the first five overs and also dismissed Jos Buttler with a straightforward catch. JSK then made a switch behind the stumps: Matthew de Villiers was brought in to keep, with Ferreira introduced as an additional bowling option.
At that stage, Durban had slumped to 22-3 on a surface on the slower side. Off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen had done the early damage, claiming all three wickets while conceding just seven runs in his three overs. JSK had one other specialist spin option in Akeal Hosein, but with spin expected to play a significant role, the team felt Ferreira, who has taken 23 T20 wickets with his off-spin in 133 matches, could add value with the ball. He was introduced into the attack in the seventh over by captain Faf du Plessis.

The move paid immediate dividends. Just three deliveries into the tactical shift, Ferreira bowled a fuller ball on middle and leg. Klaasen attempted to flick it through mid-on but instead offered a simple catch to Dian Forrester at short mid-wicket, reducing Durban to 25-4. Ferreira also bowled the ninth over, conceding nine runs, before returning to wicketkeeping duties in the 11th over.
This marked the 44th instance in T20 history of a designated wicketkeeper taking a wicket in the same match in which he has kept wickets. The most notable example came during the 2013 IPL, when Kings XI Punjab’s Adam Gilchrist, playing his final IPL match, handed the gloves to Praveen Kumar, bowled the final over, and dismissed Harbhajan Singh with the very first ball he delivered.
