Chennai Super Kings and Haryana fast bowler Anshul Kamboj was the hero for his side as they defeated a star-studded Punjab in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025/26.

Anshul Kamboj dismissed Abhishek Sharma twice in the game

Kamboj, notably, dismissed India’s T20I opener Abhishek Sharma twice, once during Punjab’s chase and then in the super over, to take Haryana to the win. He conceded just one run in the super over, and took two wickets, to make things much simpler for his side as Nishant Sidhu struck a boundary first up to finish the game

Haryana batted first in the SMAT 2025/26 match at the Gymkhana Ground in Hyderabad, and put up a mighty 207 in 20 overs. Sidhu and captain Ankit Kumar led with the bat, both scoring half-centuries. The former’s 61-run knock came off 31 deliveries and featured eight fours and three sixes. Kumar, on the other hand, hit five boundaries and four maximums in his 26-ball 51.

Sumit Kumar provided the finishing touch to drive Haryana past 200. Mumbai Indians’ Ashwani Kumar starred with the ball for Punjab to take three wickets for 31 runs, while Abhishek Sharma, Ramandeep Singh, Harpreet Brar and Mayank Markande picked up one wicket each.

Punjab were jolted early in their chase, with Kamboj sending openers Abhishek and Prabhsimran Singh (20 off 10) packing in the third over. The CSK speedster made life especially difficult for the top-ranked men's T20I batter, who managed just five runs before he was bowled by Kamboj.

Anmolpreet Singh brought Punjab back into the game with a scintillating 81-run knock off 37 balls that featured eight fours and five maximums. Sanvir Singh (30 off 16) took over the baton from Anmolpreet to bring Punjab close to the target. But they could score only 11 with 12 needed to win in the last over, with Harpreet Brar scoring 10 of them in four deliveries.

Kamboj was then tasked with bowling the super over after finishing the chase with figures of 2-26, even as the rest of the bowlers went at 8 runs per over and above. He had Abhishek and Sanvir caught by Parth Vats to set up a Haryana win. In all, Kamboj bowled six deliveries to the India opener in the game, which went: 1 dot, 2 singles, 1 four, 2 wickets.
