Facing a 223-run chase in front of their home fans, Surrey were in trouble early when they lost three wickets in the first four overs. Ryan Patel, Jason Roy and Sam Curran were all dismissed for 5 or less to leave them 16-3, with Will Jacks and Lawrence at the crease. Jacks made a brisk 31 before he was run out by Kiran Carlson.

Lawrence, however, took charge of pushing the run-rate up to keep his side in the chase. He hit the third ball of his innings for four before whacking a six off the next ball from Imad Wasim, taking 19 runs off the Pakistan international's third over. After Jacks was out he accelerated further, reaching his half-century off 24 balls with another six off Andy Gorvin.

His next 50 to reach his century were at an even faster pace, needing just 22-balls to move into three figures. Lawrence was ably assisted by Tom Curran, who finished unbeaten with 49 off 27 balls. Lawrence hit a six off the first ball of the last over with five runs required to end the chase, and finished 120* off 54 balls with five to spare.

It was Lawrence's maiden T20 hundred, his previous best having been 93 off 49 in the 2023 season of The Hundred for London Spirit. This match was only Lawrence's second outing in the T20 Blast this year, having played earlier this week against Gloucestershire and scored 31*.

Batting, bowling, wicketkeeping: Lawrence completes all-rounder triple

Before blasting his century, Lawrence had played an unusual role for him in Surrey's fielding innings. While Lawrence is known as an allrounder, and sometimes plays as Surrey's only spinner in their Championship side, he ended up playing as a wicketkeeper in this match.

While Laurie Evans started the game with the gloves, he was forced off the field injured after seven overs of play, necessitating Lawrence to take over. Surrey are missing several keeping options in their squad, with Ben Foakes, Jamie Smith, Ollie Pope and Josh Blake all currently unavailable. While Lawrence kept wicket in his younger years, his role as an off-spinner means he has played without the gloves for the bulk of his professional career.
