Discarded England great Jonny Bairstow smashed a belligerent century to power Yorkshire to victory over Lancashire in Friday’s (July 11) T20 Blast 2025 derby at Old Trafford.
Jonny Bairstow scores career-best 116 in county T20 derby
Batting first at Old Trafford, Yorkshire posted 236-6. Their innings was lit up by a 49-ball century from out-of-favour England veteran Jonny Bairstow, who unleashed a flurry of boundaries, including 10 sixes and eight fours. Bairstow’s landmark came at a rapid pace: he took just 24 balls to reach his fifty and needed only another 25 to complete his hundred. This innings broke a run of four scores below
He eventually finished on 116 off 54 balls, his fifth T20 century and also his highest score in the format. His previous best, a 56-ball 114, came for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the 2019 IPL. Will Luxton also played a free-flowing knock of 90 not out off 46 balls, including five fours and seven sixes.
Lancashire started their chase briskly, but their first wicket fell when captain Keaton Jennings was dismissed for 19 off 10. From there, Phil Salt and Jos Buttler took them to 103-1 in 9.2 overs before Salt was caught out for 38 off 20 balls. Buttler soon followed, departing for a 33-ball 55, leaving Lancashire at 124-3 in 11.5 overs. The chase faltered from there, though Jack Blatherwick, coming in at No.8, played a cameo of 34 not out off 13 balls to bring them close. However, it wasn’t enough as they finished at 217-7.
The win was Yorkshire’s fourth in 11 matches in the North Group. They are currently eighth, with only Derbyshire (three wins from 10 matches) below them.

When did Bairstow last play for England?
Bairstow, an ODI World Cup winner with England, last played for the Three Lions in the 2024 T20 World Cup, where they crashed out in the semi-finals against India. His final Test appearance also came against India earlier that year, marking his 100th cap. Prior to that, England’s group-stage exit in the 2023 ODI World Cup effectively put a halt to his ODI career as well.
Bairstow has been captaining Yorkshire in the 2025 County Championship and has been in decent form, scoring 595 runs at an average of 49.58 and a strike rate of 65.16, including five fifties.
After going unsold initially, he was signed as a mid-season replacement by Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025 following the India-Pakistan conflict. He performed reasonably well there too, notably scoring 47 off 22 against Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator and 38 off 24 against Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 – though the latter came in a losing cause.
