Gill, who is also leading Gujarat this year following Hardik Pandya’s move to Mumbai Indians, did not have the greatest start to the season, scoring 322 runs in 11 games at a strike rate of 147. His poor showings not only affected Gujarat’s performances – they are at the bottom of the table after their first 11 matches – but also saw him omitted from India’s squad for the T20 World Cup, where he was picked as a reserve player instead.

The youngster, who made three IPL tons in 2023, was at his blazing best against Chennai Super Kings today (May 10), stitching together a mammoth 210-run stand with opener Sai Sudharsan. Gill made his intention clear from the start, hitting a four and a six in the first over, soon racing away to 35 in 16. He needed nine more balls to reach his fifty and then proceeded to convert it into three digits, bringing up the landmark in the 17th over.

Gill needed only 50 balls to score his hundred, which came off a four and his emotional celebration painted a picture. Realising that the delivery was headed for the boundary, he took off his helmet and jumped up animatedly with a roar. He was also seen muttering a few words, seemingly venting his frustration at his doubters, as the dugout stood up to applaud the knock.

Gill was eventually dismissed five balls later for 104. His side posted 231-3, the highest team total against Chennai.
