Ashes 2025-26: Australia team news
Australia will closely monitor Pat Cummins’ bowling workload and fitness as he aims for a return from a back injury for the second or third Test. Scott Boland is expected to step in during Cummins’ absence for the series opener, while Steve Smith will take the reins as captain.
Some uncertainty remains around who will accompany Usman Khawaja at the top of the order, with Jake Weatherald in consideration for a Test debut in Perth. Marnus Labuschagne, who was dropped for Australia’s series against West Indies after the World Test Championship final against South Africa in June, has been recalled to the squad after he scored five hundreds in eight innings across the opening rounds of the domestic season. Cameron Green's fitness to bowl is also under some doubt, with the all-rounder looking to ramp his bowling workloads up in the early rounds of the Sheffield Shield.
Ashes 2025-26: England team news
England’s top order remains settled, with only speculation around who will occupy the No.3 position. Ollie Pope is the incumbent, but the Jacob Bethell question means his position isn’t secure.
Mark Wood will make his return to competitive cricket following knee surgery in March, while captain Ben Stokes has recovered from a shoulder injury sustained during the fourth Test against India in July and will be fit to perform as an all-rounder come Perth. Shoaib Bashir has also recovered from a broken finger on his left hand which he sustained during the third Test against India this summer.
