The Australian chase got off to a rapid start as openers Travis Head and Jake Weatherald put on 62 in 10.2 overs. Head top-edged Tongue to midwicket to depart for 29, and less than four overs later his opening partner holed out at deep fine leg off the same bowler. Will Jacks then turned one through Steve Smith to bowl him, and Australia were 92-3 with the wicket beginning to take some turn.

They inched closer before Usman Khawaja was bowled by Tongue, and the set Marnus Labuschagne was run out after a mix-up with Alex Carey. At 121-5, there was the possibility of a collapse, but Carey and Cam Green put any fears to rest, getting their side over the line with an unbeaten 40-run stand.
