Following his 134 not out against Goa in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Ruturaj Gaikwad now has the highest List A average of all time.
Ruturaj Gaikwad tops List A batting averages
Maharashtra were in trouble at 2-3 in the second over after Gaikwad had won the toss and opted to bat in Jaipur. Gaikwad walked out at this point. They slumped to 25-5 and then 52-6, but Vicky Ostwal (53) and Rajvardhan Hangargekar (32 not out) provided support to Gaikwad, who remained unbeaten in the end with 134 off 131 balls. He hit eight fours and six sixes.
Maharashtra finished on 249-7 even as Vasuki Koushik returned 3-38. At the time of writing, Goa were 10-0 after three overs.
Gaikwad’s unbeaten hundred gave him the highest List A average among all batters who have batted at least 50 times. He started the day on 57.27, but moved past Virat Kohli (57.67), Sam Hain (57.76), and finally Michael Bevan (57.86) to reach the top.
Remaining not out boosted Gaikwad’s average even further, to 58.83. He will retain the top spot even if he falls for a duck in his next innings, or scores 32 across his next two dismissals.
It is worth a mention that Devdutt Padikkal averages 83.63 from 38 innings (32 dismissals). If he scores 12 consecutive ducks from here, he will average 60.82 after 50 innings and comfortably be at the top of this list.
