WI drop vice captain

West Indies have dropped their newly appointed Test vice-captain Jomel Warrican for the second match of the series against Australia.

Having gone through a regime change following their Pakistan tour earlier this year, West Indies appointed Darren Sammy as their Test head coach, Roston Chase as captain, and Jomel Warrican as vice-captain.

Cricket West Indies explained how they followed a robust, data-driven selection process to identify the next leadership group. Chase came out on top and was made captain, while Warrican was next and made vice-captain.

The Australia series marked the beginning of West Indies' 2025-27 World Test Championship campaign. In the first Test in Barbados, they fielded an attack of three frontline seamers and one spinner to go with two all-rounders in Chase and Justin Greaves.

Warrican was picked as the lead spinner. However, seam-friendly conditions meant he was barely used. Warrican didn't bowl a single over in the first innings as Australia folded for 180. The only four overs of spin used by West Indies were bowled by Chase himself.

In the second innings, Warrican was only called upon to bowl as the fifth bowler, sending down eight overs for 0-18. Chase bowled one over which was a wicket-maiden.

For the second Test, West Indies dropped their designated vice-captain one game into his tenure, picking Anderson Phillip instead. "Anderson Phillip comes in for Jomel Worrican as this is a more seamer-friendly wicket," Roston Chase said at the toss.

Phillip had made his Test debut against Bangladesh in 2022, but didn't get another game till this one. He was amongst the wickets soon, as he dismissed Australia opener Sam Konstas in the 12th over of the innings, getting him caught behind.

Having chosen to bat first, Australia suffered a batting collapse again and were 114-5 after 27 overs.

Warrican is aged 33 and has 73 wickets from 20 Test matches at 27.80 apiece. If he played this game, it would have been his 101st first-class match. He has 401 wickets at an average of just 20.58 to his name in the format.

Having made his professional debut 16 years back in 2009, Warrican has played only three T20 games in his entire career.
