West Indies head coach Daren Sammy before match three of the One Day International Series between Ireland and the West Indies at Castle Avenue Cricket Ground in Dublin

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy has been penalised for a Code of Conduct breach during the recently concluded Barbados Test against Australia.

The first match of the three-Test series in Barbados featured several contentious decisions by third umpire Adrian Holdstock, with the hosts, West Indies, bearing most of the brunt of them. West Indies head coach Daren Sammy expressed his dismay at the umpiring calls, questioning whether Holdstock had "something against the team".

Daren Sammy fined for TV umpire criticism

After the West Indies’ 159-run loss in the Test, Sammy was fined 15 percent of his match fee for committing a Level 1 offence of the ICC Code of Conduct on the second day of the Test. Sammy breached Article 2.7, which relates to "public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an International Match or any Player, Player Support Personnel, Match Official or team participating in any International Match, irrespective of when such criticism or inappropriate comment is made".

Additionally, he was handed one demerit point to his disciplinary record, his first in 24 months. He admitted to the sanctions proposed by Javagal Srinath of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, as a result of which, no formal hearing is needed. On-field umpires Richard Kettleborough, Nitin Menon, third umpire Holdstock, and fourth umpire Gregory Brathwaite levelled the charge.

Level 1 offences carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum of 50 percent of player’s match fee and one or two demerit points.

Sammy becomes second WI team member to cop fine, after Jayden Seales

Sammy is the second member of his team to be penalised in the Barbados Test. For an incident on the opening day, fast bowler Jayden Seales was hit with a 15 percent fine of his match and a demerit point for breaching Article 2.5 of Code of Conduct, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match".
