Roston Chase became the first batter from a Full Member team - men’s or women’s - to retire out in a T20I.

The incident occurred during the third T20I between Pakistan and the West Indies in Florida on August 3 (Sunday). Coming to bat at number five with the West Indies at 110-3, needing 80 more off the last seven overs, Chase struggled to get going and was batting on 15 off 12 balls at a strike rate of 125 when he was asked to retire out.

Chase hit only two boundaries in his innings, scoring seven off his last eight deliveries, as the pressure on Sherfane Rutherford at the other end increased. Rutherford, who was batting on 18 in 14 when Chase walked out, ended up scoring 51 in 35 balls, but the failure to get support from the other end hurt West Indies’ chances.

Eventually, the hosts decided to retire out Chase at the end of 17 overs, when they still needed 41 runs. They could only get 27, losing the match by 13 runs at the end. They also lost the series 2-1, a few weeks after being whitewashed by Australia at home.

Overall, 11 players have retired out in men’s T20Is, with Bhutan’s Sonam Tobgay becoming the first, back in 2019 against Maldives. However, no one from a Full Member had been dismissed in that fashion earlier. The only other instance when a batter retired out in a match involving a Full Member team was in the 2024 T20 World Cup, when Namibia's Nikolaas Davin was dismissed that way against England.

This is not the first time that Chase has been retired out in a T20 game. Earlier this year, playing for Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, he retired out after scoring 20 off 13 against MI Emirates.
