WBBL hat-trick

Caoimhe Bray’s hat-trick helped the Sydney Sixers win the WBBL derby against the Sydney Thunder.

Sydney Sixers posted 142-9 after Sydney Thunder captain Phoebe Litchfield won the toss and opted to field at the Drummoyne Oval. Sophia Dunkley (43 in 35 balls) and Alyssa Healy (26 in 15) had taken them to 76-1 in the ninth over, but a collapse followed as Shabnim Ismail (4-0-27-3) and Georgia Voll (4-0-25-2) shared five wickets, while Samantha Bates returned figures of 4-0-22-1.

Lauren Cheatle and Maitlan Brown then had the Thunder at 19-3 before Litchfield and Anika Learoyd added 14. Litchfield then failed to time a leg-side slog off Bray, and Ash Gardner ran backwards to take a good catch at mid-wicket.

Caoimhe Bray takes seventh WBBL hat-trick

That concluded the seventh over. Bray resumed after Ellyse Perry bowled the eighth. The first ball kept low, and Learoyd played on. Bray’s next ball was pitched up and wide of off-stump. Laura Harris went after it, but Erin Burns dived to take an excellent catch to her left to give Bray the hat-trick.

Bray became the seventh bowler to complete a hat-trick in the WBBL, while Laura Harris became the second (after Corinne Hall) to become a victim in two hat-tricks. Amy Satterthwaite has also featured in two hat-tricks – once as a batter, the other as a bowler.

In her next over, Bray got Chamari Athapaththu as well to finish with 4-0-15-4. The Thunder, 49-7 at that stage, eventually finished on 118-8 due to Lucy Finn’s 34-ball unbeaten 49.

Marked as a teen prodigy in both cricket and football, Bray was the goalkeeper of the Australian national football side in the AFC Under-17 Women’s Asia Cup. She had scored heavily in age-group cricket as well as impressed on her WBBL debut in October 2024.
