South Africa were crowned champions of the 2023–25 World Test Championship on Saturday (June 14), ending their long-running trophyless streak.
After conceding a 74-run first innings lead, Aiden Markram, having registered a duck in the first innings, starred for South Africa with a 207-ball 136. The innings helped them chase 282 in the fourth innings, the joint second-highest at Lord’s, matching England’s effort against New Zealand in 2004. With the historic five-wicket win, South Africa managed to break their trophy curse, winning their first major ICC title in 27 years. Their last one came way back in 1998 when they were crowned Champions Trophy winners after beating West Indies in the final.

After New Zealand (2021) and Australia (2023), South Africa became the third team to win the World Test Championship. Apart from the WTC, the International Cricket Council (ICC) oversees three other major global competitions: the ODI World Cup, the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy.
Overall, men's cricket has seen 34 ICC tournament titles across four competitions: 13 ODI World Cups, 9 T20 World Cups, 9 Champions Trophies, and 3 World Test Championship cycles. Australia tops the list with 10 titles, followed by India (7) and the West Indies (5).
