Which country produces the best pitches? Full list of ICC's pitch and outfield ratings in the World Test Championship

The World Test Championship came into being in 2019. Since then, three editions have been completed and the fourth is ongoing. A total of 224 Test matches have been played by the end of 2025 across the four WTC cycles, the first of which was won by New Zealand, followed by Australia and South Africa.

What is the ICC pitch rating system?

Pitches and outfields for every international match are reviewed and rated by the match referees, who submit their ratings to the ICC. Before November 2023, the number of possible ratings used to be six – Very Good, Good, Average, Below Average, Poor, and Unfit. These were then consolidated into four categories – Very Good, Satisfactory, Unsatisfactory, Unfit.

In the WTC, a total of 58 venues have been used so far across the globe. Here's a venue-wise breakdown of the pitch and outfield ratings for each Test played in the WTC so far.

To keep the consistency intact across the two rating systems, we have assumed 'Good' and 'Average' ratings from the previous system to be equivalent to 'Satisfactory' in the current one, and 'Below Average' and 'Poor' to be equivalent to 'Unsatisfactory'.
