England beat New Zealand by 115 runs at Lord’s to go 1-0 up in the three-match Test series. In helpful conditions, the New Zealand fast bowlers were magnificent on day one, bowling out England for 140 after Tom Latham had won the toss and opted to field. Kyle Jamieson, back to Test cricket, led the rout with 5-62, while Nathan Smith had 3-38.
Ollie Robinson, also on comeback, then took three wickets in his first over. He finished with 5-39 as the visitors were shot out for 116 amidst concerns over the Lord’s pitch. Debutant Emilio Gay (57) then pushed England to 226 even as Smith returned 6-70. Chasing 254, New Zealand were then bowled out for 138 as spearhead Gus Atkinson finished with 5-30. Not a single ball of spin was bowled in the match.
This was the second-shortest of the 150 Test matches at Lord’s.

The win boosted England’s PCT from 31.67 to 37.88, but they remained at seventh place. New Zealand, on the other hand, slipped from second to joint fourth place after the defeat: they are tied with Bangladesh.
