Shaheen Shah Afridi appeals for a wicket during the 2026 men's T20 World Cup

Sixty-seven players from Pakistan have registered to take part in The Hundred auction, despite reports that IPL-owned teams will not consider Pakistan players for selection.

Shaheen Shah Afridi leads the list of Pakistan players set to go under the gavel in the auction, which will take place on March 11 and March 12. He and five other players (Saim Ayub, Shadab Khan, Muhammad Nawaz, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah) have set their base price at the highest possible entry point – £100,000. A total of 63 Pakistani players have entered the men's auction, while four players have registered for the women's auction.

Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan are the most notable absentees from the list. Although neither has previously played in the competition, both entered the draft in 2024. Pakistan have a Test series scheduled against West Indies during the West Indies in August, but their white-ball only players will be free from international commitments during The Hundred window.

A report from the BBC yesterday (March 19) alleged that no IPL-owned Hundred team would bid for Pakistani players in the auction. The report cited messages from a "senior ECB official" indicating to an agent stating that interest in Pakistani players would be limited to teams not under IPL ownership. Pakistan players have not played in the IPL since 2008, and few appear in foreign franchises under IPL ownership.

Last year, ECB chief executive Richard Gould said that he expected "players from all nations to be selected for teams" in The Hundred. He also said anti-discrimination policies were in place following the ECB's sale of their shares in the six teams. An ECB spokesperson was quoted in the BBC report as saying: "The Hundred welcomes men's and women's players from all over the world and we would expect the eight teams to reflect that."

In response to the report, former England captain Michael Vaughan wrote on X: "The ECB need to act fast on this .. they own the league and this should not be allowed to happen .. the most inclusive sport in the country is not one that allows this to happen .."

Four IPL franchises now either fully or partly own Hundred teams. The company which own Lucknow Super Giants own a 70 per cent share in Manchester Super Giants, The Sun Group (Sunrisers Hyderabad) own 100 per cent of Sunrisers Leeds, the Ambani family (Mumbai Indians) own a 49 per cent share in MI London, and GMR Group (Delhi Capitals) own a 49 per cent share in Southern Brave – GMR Group also hold a majority stake in Hampshire CCC.

The Hundred auction will take place on March 11 and March 12. Ahead of the auction, each team will submit a list of 75-100 players they are most interested in signing, and a short-list of approximately 200 players will be collated to go under the gavel.
