Cheteshwar Pujara announces retirement

Pujara announced his retirement through an Instagram post, where he thanked – among others – the BCCI as well as the Saurashtra Cricket Association for the opportunity and support.

From 103 Tests between 2010/11 and 2023, Pujara had 7,195 runs at 43.60. He scored 19 hundreds. He also played five ODIs, and was part of the IPL-winning Chennai Super Kings squad in 2021.

Of Pujara’s 10 Test hundreds, five have come against each of Australia and England. These include his three double tons – 206 not out against England and 204 against Australia, both in 2012/13, and 202 against England in 2016/17.

Pujara’s most famous performance came against a full-strength Australian attack in 2018/19, where he faced 1,258 balls – the most in a four-Test series by any touring batter in the country – for his 521 runs at 74.42 with three tons. He played a crucial role in India’s first ever Test series win in Australia. Four years later, he helped them win again, with three fifties in eight Tests.

While not a specialist opener, Pujara made 145 not out when he carried his bat through the all-out Indian innings of 312 against Sri Lanka at the SSC in Colombo in 2015.

A giant of first-class cricket, he has 21,301 runs at 51.82 with 66 hundreds. Of these, 18 are double tons, which puts him at fifth place on the all-time list. He was the first Indian to score three triple-hundreds, a feat that has since been equalled by only Ravindra Jadeja, his India and Saurashtra teammate.

Since he has specifically retired from only Indian cricket, Pujara add to these numbers. He has had a prolific career with Sussex.
