Tamim Iqbal has been appointed as the new Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president amid a board shake-up.
Tamim Iqbal to lead ad-hoc committee as BCB president
The former Bangladesh captain has been appointed as the board president following the dissolution of the Aminul Islam-led board of directors. Tamim will lead an ad-hoc committee of 11 members, who will serve a three-month tenure. They have been tasked with arranging a fresh election within that period, while also overseeing cricketing affairs.
The National Sports Committee (NSC) of Bangladesh found irregularities in the BCB elections that were held in October last year. Allegations were raised on the transparency of the elections, following which a five-member investigation committee was set up, who submitted their findings on Sunday, April 5.
NSC sports director Aminul Ehsan, while announcing the findings of the committee at a press conference on Tuesday, April 7, said the former “board of directors was not formed in a proper manner, and is not able to complete its work in a proper manner."
He added that they had “informed the ICC our decision to dissolve this board of directors. The NSC plays an important role for Bangladesh cricket or any sport in Bangladesh and on behalf of the government. Therefore, we are optimistic about the BCB and we think that the ICC will definitely uphold this decision.”
Tamim, in the running for the next BCB president alongside Aminul for the October elections, had accused Aminul of “interference” and withdrew his name ahead of the voting, before submitting a formal request to the NSC this March for an investigation into the election.
He will now lead an 11-member team, which also features batter-turned-commentator Athar Ali Khan. Rashna Imam, Mirza Yasir Abbas, Sayeed Ibrahim Ahmed, Israfil Khasru, Minhajul Abedin, Tanzil Chowdhury, Salman Ispahani, Rafiqul Islam and Fahim Sinha.
