UAE pulled off a record run chase against Bangladesh in the second T20I in Sharjah on Monday (May 19), keeping the series alive with a thrilling comeback.

Put in to bat first, Bangladesh got off to a strong start as openers Tanzid Hasan Tamim (59 off 33 balls) and Litton Das (40 off 32) put together a 90-run stand in just 55 balls. Towhid Hridoy then provided a crucial late surge with a 24-ball 45, supported by Jaker Ali’s quick 18 off six, helping Bangladesh post 205-5.

In response, the hosts started strongly, scoring 68 runs in the powerplay. Captain Muhammad Waseem and his opening partner Muhammad Zohaib raced to 38 off 34 balls, adding 107 in 61 balls. No.3 Rahul Chopra was dismissed cheaply, while Waseem eventually fell for a 42-ball 82, leaving UAE at 148-3 in 14.5 overs.

Apart from the opening stand, there were no major contributions, but brief cameos from Asif Khan (19 off 12) and Alishan Sharafu (13 off 9) kept them in the hunt. With 17 runs needed off the last seven balls, Shoriful Islam conceded five overthrows, reducing the equation to 12 in the last over six. Haider Ali (15 not out off 6) and Dhruv Parashar (11 off 7) guided UAE over the line with a ball and five wickets to spare.

This was the UAE’s first ever win against Bangladesh in any format and their first-ever 200-plus chase in T20Is. It also marked the highest successful chase by an Associate Nation against a Full Member in T20I history, surpassing the previous record held by the Netherlands (183-4 vs Ireland in 2019).

Additionally, the UAE’s innings became only the second instance of an associate team scoring 200-plus in a T20I against a Full Member, after Scotland’s 213-6 against Ireland in 2023.

The three-match series is tied 1-1, with the decider still to be played on May 21.
