Watch: Glenn Phillips followed a four with a sensational six over extra cover while batting left-handed during the Super Smash clash between Otago Volts and Central Districts today (December 30).
Phillips made a cautious start after walking out at No.4. He was batting on 15 off 15 at one stage, but got going thereafter, reaching his fifty in 32 balls. The right-hander eventually ended on 90* off 48 deliveries, hitting seven fours and four sixes, including a couple of shots while batting left-handed.
Phillips first switched to batting with the other hand during the 19th over, when Dean Foxcroft sent a full ball down the right-hander's leg stump. Phillips turned left-handed and smashed a cover drive past the sweeper for a four, leaving the fielders amazed. He did one better in the next over, sent down by Jayden Lennox. Even before the fifth ball was bowled, Phillips turned to a left-handed stance, leading to several changes in the field placements. The bowler fired a slow, length ball outside the left-hander’s off-stump, which Phillips smoked over extra cover for a maximum. “You’ve got to be kidding me”, exclaimed the commentators, as Central Stag’s Ajaz Patel was left smiling in wonderment.
He continued batting with his weaker hand for the last ball too, sweeping it towards midwicket. The batters ran for two, but could manage just one in the end, as Otago finished on 193-7. They ended up winning by 41 runs.
