I'll do it myself: Harry Brook breaks England all-time ODI record with 135 out of 223

England captain Harry Brook smashed an astonishing lone-effort hundred in the first ODI vs New Zealand at Mount Maunganui on Sunday (October 26).

Harry Brook resuces England from 5-3

England were put in to bat after losing the toss, only to have a horrid start to their innings. Jamie Smith was bowled first ball by Matt Henry, while Zakary Foulkes got rid of Ben Duckett and Joe Root both in the second over to leave England reeling at 5-3.

Brook walked in at No.5, but had to witness a continuous fall of wickets from the other end as the visitors slipped to 56-6 in the 12th over. That is when he was joined by Jamie Overton, with whom the England captain added 87 runs in 86 balls for the seventh wicket. Overton contributed 46 of those.

Another mini-collapse had England nine down for 166, which is when Brook took matters in his own hands.

Having reached his fifty off 36 balls as early as the 16th over of the innings, Brook was batting on 85 off 73 when Adil Rashid was the ninth man out on the last ball of the 30th over. From there, Brook dominated a 57-run last wicket stand, smashing 50 off 28 himself while allowing No.11 Luke Wood to face only four balls in a partnership that spanned 32.

In the process, Brook reached his second ODI ton, getting there of a mere 81 deliveries after hitting Jacob Duffy for three consecutive sixes. He was eventually dismissed for 135 off 101, caught off the bowling of Mitchell Santner as England finished on 223.

Highest percentage of runs in a completed men's ODI innings

Brook's 135 out of England's team total of 223 accounted for 60.53 per cent of the team's runs. That makes it the highest percentage of team runs scored by an England batter in a completed men's ODI innings, surpassing Robin Smith's 167* out of 277-5 vs Australia in 1993.

Brook's effort stands at 12th on the all-time list, which is led by Viv Richards' iconic 189* vs England out of a team score of 272-9 in 1984.

Brook broke several other records, including smashing the most sixes (11) by a captain batting at No.5 or below in men's ODIs, going past Angelo Mathews who hit 10 sixes in his 139* vs India in 2014.

Brook's 135 is also the fifth-highest individual score by an England captain in the format, and the highest by an England captain batting at No.5 or below.
