BAN vs AUS

Against Bangladesh in Mirpur, Australia lost their first three wickets before scoring a run for the first time in men’s ODIs.

Australia lose three for nought in two overs

One-down in the three-match ODI series, Australia batted first in the second game after Josh Inglis won the toss and opted to bat at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

Disaster struck in the first over, when Taskin Ahmed curled the fourth ball in and clean bowled Matthew Short - his third consecutive ODI duck, the joint-most for Australia. At the other end, Cooper Connolly poked at Mustafizur Rahman’s first ball and was caught behind. Five balls later, Matt Renshaw’s tentative push resulted in another caught-behind dismissal.

Two overs into their innings, Australia were three down without scoring a run. This was their worst-ever start in ODIs, and the fourth time a team lost three wickets without scoring in the format. The last instance, back in 2003, also involved Bangladesh – but they were batting on that occasion.

Australia soon became 25-4 when Mustafizur removed Alex Carey (13), but they recovered somewhat from there. At the time of writing, they were 60-4 in 15.3 overs with Inglis (32) and Cameron Green (16) at the crease.
