Vaibhav Suryavanshi versus England U19 in a Youth ODI

Fourteen-year-old wonderkid Vaibhav Suryavanshi continued his rapid rise in Indian cricket, smashing 86 off 31 for India U19 against England U19 in the ongoing Youth ODI series.

Suryavanshi has already generated headlines for his teenage cricketing achievements, none more than his whirlwind century in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals. Currently part of the India U19 setup – still alongside teammates senior to him – he put forth another incredulous performance in the third Youth ODI against England U19.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi smashes 20-ball fifty

Opening the batting alongside captain Abhigyan Kundu, he smashed 86 off just 31 balls, setting the platform for his side's chase of 269. He hit nine sixes in all, five of which came in a ten-ball stretch.

He reached his fifty with his six, off 20 balls, in the sixth over of the innings. By the eighth over, he was in the 80s.

He was dismissed trying to pull a short one towards fine leg, and was taken by Joseph Moores off Alexander Wade.

It was Suryavanshi's sixth innings in Youth ODIs, half of which have come in the ongoing series. So far, he's put together scores of 48 (19), 45 (34) and now 86 (31) in the series, leading the run-charts for the Indian contingent.

His strike-rate was the second-best for a fifty-plus score in Youth ODIs for India, behind Rishabh Pant's 78 off 24 for India U19 against Nepal in the 2016 U19 World Cup.

If he did reach his century, he would have been the youngest Indian to score a Youth ODI hundred. Sarfaraz Khan is currently the youngest, having reached three figures aged 15 years and 338 days against South Africa U19 in 2013.

At 14 years and 97 days, Suryavanshi would have comfortably surpassed him.

Among those players with age available, Bangladesh's Najmul Hossain Shanto, who recently stepped down as Test captain, is the youngest to score a Youth ODI ton, reaching the landmark aged 14 years and 241 days against Sri Lanka U19 in 2013.

Before he was dismissed, he looked on course to hit the fastest Youth ODI century ever. The record currently sits with Pakistan's Kamran Ghulam, who hit a 53-ball century against England U19 in 2013.

Among Indians, that record belongs to Raj Angad Bawa, who hit a 69-ball ton against Uganda in the 2022 U19 World Cup.
