While not a World Cup year, 2025 marked the return of the Champions Trophy after nearly eight years. In all, 20 teams played 115 men’s ODIs. Here, the Wisden.com editorial team has picked the best men’s ODI innings of 2025.
5. Josh Inglis 120* off 86 vs England, Lahore, February 22
When Ben Duckett had smashed a 143-ball 165 to take England to 351-8, little did anyone think it would be trumped, especially after Australia became 27-2 and then 136-4. Yet, as Alex Carey held the fort at the other end, Inglis made the task look ridiculously easy. When Glenn Maxwell walked out and only the bowlers remained, Inglis switched gears, smashing three sixes in five balls – a pull and a scoop off Brydon Carse and an incredible lofted drive off a Jofra Archer slower ball. As England fell apart, Maxwell joined in. A plethora of records was broken as the match was dusted with 15 balls to spare.
4. George Munsey 191 off 150 vs Netherlands, Dundee, June 12
Munsey’s 191 was not merely the highest ODI score of 2025 but also the highest ever by anyone from an Associate Nation. Scotland became 162-4 in the 29th over with none of the dismissed batters reaching 25, but that did not deter Munsey from hitting sixes: his 11 sixes were the joint-most of the year. Ten balls remained when Munsey was eventually bowled, but he had done his bit to push his team to 369-6. It turned out to be inadequate as the Netherlands completed the chase in the last over.
3. Towhid Hridoy 100 off 118 vs India, Dubai, February 20
As with Munsey’s hundred, this one too came in a defeat – against a team that went on win the tournament undefeated. Bangladesh were 26-3 when Hridoy walked out. They soon became 35-5 (and could have been 35-6 had Rohit Sharma caught Jaker Ali). Hridoy took his time: he scored only six off the first 17 balls he faced, and hit a solitary boundary off the first 36. But on a tricky surface against a world-class attack, he curbed his strokes and efficiently rotated the strike, putting on 154 for the sixth wicket. By the time he was last out, he had taken Bangladesh to 228: it was not enough.
2. Harry Brook 135 off 101 vs New Zealand, Mount Maunganui, October 26
A third entry in a lost cause, this was perhaps the most astonishing innings. At 10-4 and then 56-6, England seemed dusted before Jamie Overton helped Brook put on 87, but England were nine down by 166. As he was running out of partners, Brook took on the bowling attack as well as – once last man Luke Wood walked out – retained the strike: the 57-run stand is England’s highest for the last wicket. In all, he hit nine fours and 11 sixes in his 101-ball 135 – a whopping 60.53 per cent of England’s 223 – the sixth-highest contribution by anyone in an all-out ODI innings. England then got early wickets, but not enough of them.
1. Ibrahim Zadran 177 off 146 vs England, Lahore, February 25
Like so many entries on this list, Zadran, too, had to lift his team from a hopeless situation. In a quasi-knockout game, England had Afghanistan at 37-3, but Zadran stayed put. He began cautiously, picking up only two runs in the first six overs before exploding with a six off Mark Wood and two fours off Archer. The fourth boundary hit did not come until the 20th over, but he ensured he did not throw away the start. There was support at the other end, but no fifty – so it mostly came down to Zadran to take Afghanistan to a big total.
The fifty took Zadran 65 balls. The hundred, another 41. The third fifty, a mere 28. By ensuring he stayed put until the final over, Zadran set new records and pushed England to 325-7. It was an innings typical of ODIs, where a batter has to set a target with an eye on the wickets and another on the balls over a phase longer than a T20.
Later that night, Joe Root responded with a near-solo hundred, but the sheer volume of Zadran’s runs was enough to see Afghanistan through.
