Kurtis Patterson registered his career-best first-class score of 173 to help New South Wales post a daunting target for South Australia in their 2025/26 Sheffield Shield game.
NSW captain Jack Edwards chose to bat first at the Sydney Cricket Ground as the 2025/26 Sheffield Shield season resumed. They started well with openers Sam Konstas and William Salzman adding 52 runs together, before losing three quick wickets,
Josh Philippe and Konstas then joined hands to add 55 for the fourth wicket, before Edwards and Joel Davies scored another 45 crucial runs together for the sixth as NSW managed 202, with Patterson, batting at No.3, scoring just six runs.
South Australia came within five runs of NSW’s first-innings total, and Jason Sangha top-scored for them with a 59. Liam Hatcher picked up a four-wicket haul, whereas Edwards took three before Patterson took over.

The southpaw walked in at 34-1, which soon became 34-2, but held one end up to almost single-handedly take NSW to 440-8, when they declared to hand South Australia 446 to win. Patterson hit 14 fours and a maximum during his 302-ball stay, constructing two 100-plus partnerships.
He first added 106 runs with Edwards for the fifth wicket before a potentially match-defining 130-run stand with Tanveer Sangha for the eighth. Patterson also scored an unbeaten 50 runs together with the No.10, Hatcher. In reply, South Australia had scored 61/1 with a day’s play left in the match.
The 173-run knock was Patterson’s highest in first-class cricket, which came in his 100th Sheffield Shield appearance. His previous top score in the format was a 169* against Western Australia in the 2024/25 Shield season.
Patterson also has two Australia Test appearances under his belt, both of which came against Sri Lanka in early 2019. In two innings across the two matches, he returned scores of 30 and 114* to average 144 in the format, which is the highest for any batter in Tests without any filters.
