Senuja Wekunagoda, who represented Sri Lanka at this year's Under-19 World Cup, has continued his impressive run of form, following three successive Youth ODI fifties with a double century against India in the ongoing Youth Test.
Who is the 17-year-old Senuja Wekunagoda?
Wekunagoda made his Sri Lanka Under-19 debut against Bangladesh last year and made an immediate impression with a half-century in a 50-over game. He subsequently earned a place in Sri Lanka's squad for the Under-19 World Cup, where he played two matches, scoring 43 and 48, the latter coming in a chase of 262 against South Africa.
The left-hander retained his place for the Youth ODI series against India earlier this month, finishing with 218 runs at an average of 72.66. He was one of only two batters to score more than 200 runs in the series. He made 91 off 111 balls in the opening game, followed it up with a 64-ball 60 in the second, and capped the series with a brisk 67 in the third ODI as Sri Lanka successfully chased 291.
He carried that form into the first Youth Test against India in Galle. Coming in at No.3 after the fifth ball of the innings, he converted his start into a marathon knock, reaching his double century on the opening day (July 13) before eventually falling for 233 from 267 deliveries. His innings featured 33 fours and a six, helping Sri Lanka declare on 424-9.
The knock is the sixth-highest individual score in Youth Test history and the highest ever by a Sri Lankan. The previous national record was held by Yashodha Lanka, who scored 213 against England Under-19 in 2011. Overall, 22 batters have a double centuries in Youth Tests, with Clinton Peake remaining the only player to register a triple hundred in the format.
