Veerasammy Permaul

Veerasammy Permaul’s all-round brilliance helped Guyana beat Windward Islands by an innings in the West Indies Championship.

Veerasamy Permaul, Gudakesh Motie bowl Guyana to innings win

After Nial Smith (5-36) had shot out Windward Islands for 151 in the first innings at St John’s, Guyana shut the hosts out of the game by piling 491. Matthew Nandu (54), Kevlon Anderson (41), Kemol Savory (72), Keemo Paul (56), and Richie Looknauth (42) all contributed, while Tagenarine Chanderpaul grinded for a 196-ball 35.

Still, at 293-7 and then at 331-8, Windward Islands probably had a whiff of a comeback, but No.10 Shamar Joseph hit a whirlwind 32-ball 46, while No.11 Smith scored 37 in 52 balls. Permaul (82 not out) stayed put at the other end, adding 74 and 86 for the last two wickets to stretch the lead to 340 runs. He is still without a first-class hundred, though both Joseph and Smith got their career-best scores in the format.

Windward Islands reached 105-1 and then 162-3, but the rest caved in against Gudakesh Motie (5-51) and Permaul (4-20). Only opener Ackeem Auguste (eighth out for 91) put up some resistance as Guyana won by an innings and 141 runs.

Barbados take lead, Trinidad-Leeward called off

The match between Trinidad & Tobago and Leeward Islands was called off due to a dangerous pitch at North Sound. Trailing by 44, Leeward Islands were 140-7 in the second (after being 43-5) when the umpires stopped play. Jayden Seales (7-34) had taken every wicket to fall in the innings until that point.

At Kingston, captain Kraigg Brathwaite (176) and Kevin Wickham (105, his third consecutive first-class hundred) pushed Barbados past Jamaica’s first-innings total of 457. Barbados finished the day on 460-5 as Pete Salmon returned 4-100.
