Left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed bowled a miserly spell in the BPL today (January 5), to take the best figures by a spinner in the competition's history.
Playing for Sylhet Titans who were bowling first, Nasum picked up the first wicket of the innings with his first ball, snaring Soumya Sarkar. His opening over was a fruitful one for Sylhet, with Munim Shahriar also falling to a run out. Only four runs came from Nasum's opening over, coming from a single boundary hit by Shahriar, which would be the only boundary hit off Nasum during his spell.
Staying in the action in the following over, Nasum paired up with Khaled Ahmed to take a catch off the right-arm pacer's bowling, and dismiss Habibur Rahman Sohan for 18, leaving Noakhali Express 28-3. Nasum was held back until the 11th over of the game, when Noakhali were 45-4, and continued the scoring squeeze. A single came off the first ball of his over before pressure was built by three consecutive dots. Haider Ali was out off the fifth ball of the over, trapped lbw.
His third over was when Nasum did most damage, however. After sending down a single and a dot, he bowled Mehedi Hasan Rana and dismissed Zahir Khan from consecutive deliveries. New batter Bilal Sami faced one dot before he was drawn down the pitch and stumped, giving Nasum his five-for and three wickets in four balls.
Best figures in BPL history – Nasum Ahmed best among spinners
Nasum ended the innings with five wickets and having conceded seven runs off his four overs. Twenty of his 24 deliveries were dots. Noakhali were bowled out for 61, which Sylhet chased down in 8.4 overs with six wickets remaining.
Those figures are the best figures in BPL history by a spinner and the fifth-best of any bowler. Until Nasum's spell, the record for spinners was held by Shakib Al Hasan, who took 5-16 in 2017.
