After scoring a blistering fifty in the One-Day Cup clash for Tasmania, Mitchell Owen also picked up a four-for in the second innings against Victoria.
Mitchell Owen puts in an all-round show in the One-Day Cup
Batting first, Owen produced a sensational innings at the top of the order to steer Tasmania to a commanding total of 381 at Albion. His 53 off just 21 balls featured five fours and four sixes, including a dominant assault on Mitchell Perry, who leaked 48 runs in his opening three overs. Owen’s knock marked the 100th instance of a List A fifty in 20 balls or fewer, adding to his record-breaking exploits, including last season’s 17-ball fifty against South Australia.
In the second innings, he was asked to bowl the last five balls of Billy Stanlake’s third over, after an injury forced him out of the field. Owen did not have the greatest start with the ball, conceding two fours, but soon dismissed Marcus Harris for 38. In the 25th over of the innings, he sent back Thomas Rogers, Peter Handscomb and Glenn Maxwell, leaving Victoria struggling at 152-6. They were eventually all out for 272, with Owen finishing with a career-best of 4-57 in 6.5 overs.
He narrowly missed out on becoming just the third Australian with a List A fifty and a five-for in domestic cricket. Dan Christian, who scored 86 and picked 6-48 in 2010/11, and John Davison (59 and 5-26 in 2003/04) are the only ones to achieve that feat.
Owen has scored 388 runs from 19 List A matches and taken 11 wickets. He was struggling for runs in the lead-up to the game, with three consecutive single-digit scores. He made his T20I debut against the West Indies in July, ending the series with 125 runs at a strike rate of 192.30.
