Hugh Weibgen celebrates winning the U19 World Cup in 2024

Playing in the Premier division of the Surrey Championship, former Australia U19 captain Hugh Weibgen scored a century against an attack which included England quick Gus Atkinson.

Opening the batting for Sunbury CC, Weibgen and Ranjan Soni put on a big opening stand, which reached 118 before the first wicket fell. Soni was trapped lbw by Gus Grant, the first of seven wickets the spinner would take in the innings. Despite having the services of England pacer Atkinson available to them – who was released from the squad for the third Test against India at Lord's to play in the fixture – Weibgen was put in an innings-defining performance.

He scored 112 off 121 balls, with Sunbury posting a target of 267 for Spencer to get. Atkinson went wicketless from his eight overs and conceded 36 runs. He also stepped out at No.3 in the chase, scoring 32 off 30 balls before he was dismissed by left-arm spinner Vishal Manro looking for a big shot. Sunbury ran out winners by 66 runs.

Who is Hugh Weibgen?

Centurion Weibgen is another player in the match with international pedigree. The 20-year-old captained Australia to victory in the U19 World Cup last year, scoring 304 runs in the competition and finishing fourth on the run-scoring charts. He also played for Sydney Thunder in this year's BBL, but only managed to make it out of single figures twice in his six innings.

However, Weibgen has been in excellent form for Sunbury so far this summer, with this being his fourth century of the season. His high score remains a 180 in a League game against a Dulwich side which featured former India Test wicketkeeper KS Bharat, while he also has four half-centuries to his name.
