UAE captain Muhammad Waseem’s astonishing numbers make him statistically one of the most dangerous T20 batters.
With a 42-ball 82 at the top, captain Muhammad Waseem led the charge as the UAE chased down 206 against Bangladesh in the second T20I. Not only was it their first win against the tourists but it was also the first time an Associate Nation chased more than 200 to beat a Full Member.
This was not a one-off. At the time of writing, Waseem has 2,651 runs in T20Is – not only the most for the UAE but more than twice of anyone from that nation.
More than the how many, what makes Waseem’s career astonishing is the how of it: he has struck at 156 across 71 innings while averaging 40.16. Among batters with as many runs in T20Is, no has scored at a better strike rate, and only Virat Kohli and Mohammad Rizwan have better averages. In fact, with an average of 40 and a strike rate of 156, no one comes remotely close to Waseem’s career aggregate runs.
Most runs in T20Is with an average of 40 and a strike rate of 150
Until May 20, 2025
Player | Team | Runs | Average | SR |
Muhammad Waseem | UAE | 2,651 | 40.16 | 156 |
Faheem Nazir | Switzerland | 813 | 54.20 | 151 |
Tilak Varma | India | 749 | 49.93 | 155 |
Saiteja Mukkamalla | USA | 639 | 42.60 | 153 |
Rinku Singh | India | 546 | 42.00 | 161 |
One can argue that most of Waseem’s runs have come against Associate Nations. Indeed, only 20 of his 71 T20Is have been against Full Members. But then, one can expand the numbers to all T20.
In 2024, Waseem played for Chattogram in the BPL, for Colombo in the LPL, and for the MI New York in the MLC. If one uses an average of 35 and a strike rate of 135 as cut-offs, Waseem is still third on the list.

AB de Villiers | 9,424 | 37.24 | 150 |
Suryakumar Yadav | 8,413 | 35.05 | 153 |

Rajat Patidar | 2,702 | 36.51 | 156 |
Graeme Hick | 1,201 | 36.39 | 156 |
This is not to say that Waseem is in the league of elite T20 batters like de Villiers or Suryakumar, but few can doubt his place with those numerical cut-off. It is not his fault that the UAE does not play Full Members often or most high-profile T20 franchise leagues tend to go for cricketers from the more popular sides.
Waseem is not just a prolific run-scorer – but also a brutal six-hitter
However, one standout aspect of Waseem’s career may make him a lucrative option for franchise teams: he can hit sixes. In all T20I cricket, only two batters have hit more sixes.
