Australia suffered their biggest T20I defeat in the third match of the series against Pakistan on Sunday, February 1, ahead of the T20 World Cup.
Australia had a dismal T20I tour of Pakistan, where they were clean-swept 3-0. To make matters worse, they suffered two of their three biggest defeats in the format during the series, just a week before the ICC event.
After going down by 22 runs in the opening T20I, Australia were outdone by the Pakistan spinners, who picked up all 10 wickets, as the visitors failed to chase 199 and lost by 90 runs in the second. This was their second-biggest defeat in T20Is at the time.
Just a day later, however, they fell to an all-time low, losing by 111 runs in the final T20I to make it their biggest defeat in the format. Their previous heaviest loss in T20Is came against England, all the way back in 2005.
Pakistan batted first in the third T20I and posted a hefty 207-6, riding on half-centuries from Saim Ayub and Babar Azam, along with a quickfire 19-ball 46 from Shadab Khan. Australia lost their way early on in the chase and couldn’t get back on track to get bowled out for 96. Mohammad Nawaz was named Player of the Match for a superb spell of 5-18, his best figures in the format.
Australia begin their T20 World Cup campaign against Ireland on February 11, while Pakistan begin theirs against the Netherlands on February 7.
