Burger, Coetzee return to T20I squad; Norje injured again

Gerald Coetzee, and left-armer Nandre Burger have returned to the Proteas set up following injury problem.s, and could be in line for their first international appearances since November and September 2024 respectively. Both players picked up injuries in January which ruled them out of the SA20 – a back stress fracture for Burger, and a hamstring strain for Coetzee.

Coetzee recovered in time to make the squad for the pre-Champions Trophy ODI tri-series in Pakistan, but a groin injury subsequently kept him out of both competitions. He later returned to action in the IPL with Gujarat Titans, and has so far played twice for the Seattle Orcas in Major League Cricket this season.

Burger's last game for South Africa came against Afghanistan in September 2024. He was signed by Rajasthan Royals in May as an injury replacement for Sandeep Sharma, but did not play a game. He has also been in action in the MLC, playing three games for the Texas Super Kings.

Another tearaway quick in Anrich Nortje has not made it back to the squad, with head coach Shukri Conrad clarifying he is injured again: “We will have to see the length of the time that he will be out. And the extent of the injury. I really feel for him. He is a superstar fast bowler and having to deal with setback after setback can't be easy. We will wait to see how serious it is.” Nortje has not played for South Africa since the 2024 T20 World Cup final, but did manage two matches for Kolkata Knight Riders in this year's IPL.
