Biography

Raw pace, steep bounce, and a relentless edge - Nandre Burger has quickly carved a reputation as one of South Africa’s most exciting left-arm quicks. Born on August 11, 1995, in Krugersdorp, Burger’s high-arm action and ability to consistently breach the 145 kph mark make him a nightmare for batters, especially at the top of the order. Rather than relying heavily on swing like many left-armers, he uses his height to extract sharp bounce and unleash a vicious bouncer, turning even good-length deliveries into serious threats.

His professional journey was shaped in the grind of South African domestic cricket, representing teams like Gauteng, Lions, and Western Province. Burger made his First-class debut in the Sunfoil 3-Day Cup for Gauteng in 2016, followed by his T20 debut in the CSA T20 Challenge and his List A debut in the Provincial One-Day Challenge the following year. These early years helped him build endurance for long spells in red-ball cricket while sharpening his tactical awareness in white-ball formats. His breakthrough performances in the SA20 for the Joburg Super Kings proved to be the turning point, showcasing his ability to deliver under pressure in a high-profile T20 league.

Burger’s rise to international cricket was nothing short of remarkable. During India’s tour of South Africa in December 2023, he achieved the rare feat of making his debut in all three formats within a single month. His Test debut at Centurion stood out, where he picked up 11 wickets across two matches against a formidable Indian batting lineup, immediately establishing himself as a bowler for big occasions.

His rise has injected a valuable left-arm edge into South Africa’s pace attack, offering the perfect balance to their right-arm-heavy lineup. That impact soon translated into the franchise circuit, where he earned a deal with the Rajasthan Royals and made a mark with his knack for early Powerplay breakthroughs. Burger has continued to be part of JSK’s plans in the SA20, and despite not featuring in a single game during the 2025 IPL season, RR showed faith in his abilities by retaining him.
