Martin Andersson dished out an all-timer all-round performance in Derbyshire’s T20 Blast win over Leicestershire on Wednesday (May 27).
Martin Andersson makes 57 (29), takes 6-23 in record performance
Andersson, opening the batting, slammed 57 off 29 to help Derbyshire post 230-5 before wreaking havoc with the ball to register figures of 6-23 from his four overs. He also took two catches to become only the second player to score a fifty, pick up six wickets and pouch two catches in a T20 game, and first in a non-international match.
Namibia's JJ Smut was the first to achieve the feat, doing so in the decider of a three-T20I series against Uganda in 2022. He scored 71 off 35 before picking up six wickets for 10 runs, including a hat-trick, from his four overs, while also taking two catches to lead his side to a 52-run win.
The Derbyshire all-rounder also became the sixth player to score a fifty and take a six-for in a T20 game. Former South Africa all-rounder Andrew Hall, then playing for Northamptonshire, was the first player to do so in 2008 before Shakib Al Hasan, Ravi Bopara, Smit, Venkatesh Iyer, and finally Andersson joined the exclusive list.
Andersson's half-century and six-for take Derbyshire to big win
Andersson’s opening partner, Aneurin Donald, fell just one short of a fifty, while Celeb Jewell remained unbeaten for a 35-ball 58. Matthew Montgomery (27 off 13) and Amrit Basra (11 off three) finished the innings strongly as Derbyshire posted their second-highest T20 total, one short of the record of 231, which also came against Leicestershire in 2023.
The fast-bowling pair of Jack Morley and Ben Aitchison gave them a solid start in the second innings, removing the Leics top three to reduce them to 6-3 in the second over. Ashton Turner (53 off 22) and Ben Cox (34 off 21) turned the tide, though, together adding 92 runs in 38 balls to get Leics back in the game before Andersson struck, dismissing both in a game-defining ninth over, both caught by Ross Whiteley.
Liam Trevaskis and Ben Green were his next two victims, while Ian Holland and Josh Hull both fell caught and bowled on consecutive deliveries of the 15th over as Andersson finished with figures of 6-23, and became the first Derbyshire bowler to take six wickets in a T20 game. Alex Green was run out as Derbyshire registered an 85-run win.
This was Andersson's first five-wicket haul in T20 cricket and his fifth half-century. He made his 20-over debut in 2018 for Middlesex before signing for Derbyshire ahead of the 2025 domestic season. He had also spent a short loan spell at Derbyshire in 2018. The all-rounder has since scored 818 runs in 62 T20s at a strike-rate of 127.81, picked up 40 wickets at 27.65 each, and sports an economy of 10.27.
