Mithun Manhas was announced as the 37th BCCI president on Sunday (September 28). It is just the latest in a number of cricketing roles he has played so far.
Mithun Manhas announced as 37th BCCI president
After the board's Annual General Meeting (AGM) on September 28, Manhas was elected to the post, taking over from Roger Binny, who resigned earlier this year. According to a report from the Indian Express, Manhas was elected unopposed after the other three candidates – Harbhajan Singh, Sourav Ganguly and Raghuram Bhat – did not file their nomination papers by the September 21 deadline.
Bhat, however, has been elected as the new BCCI treasurer. The other significant changes were the addition of former India cricketers RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha to the Men's Selection Committee. Ojha replaced S Sharath as the selector from South Zone, with Sharath now named chair of the Junior Cricket Committee.
Mithun Manhas: Delhi captain and IPL regular
Born in the Doda region of Jammu and Kashmir, Manhas moved to Delhi to pursue his professional cricketing career. His first-class debut came in the Ranji Trophy against Haryana in 1997. He batted at No.5, scoring 11 not out. By then, Manhas had already played for Rest of India U19s alongside the likes of Deep Dasgupta, Hemang Badani and Murali Kartik. A 19-year-old Manhas also shared a dressing room with Wasim Jaffer and Kiran More on a tour of Scotland with the Star Club of India.

He was made Delhi captain in 2000, and future India cricketers Ashish Nehra, Gautam Gambhir and Aakash Chopra were among those under his charge. Manhas remained in the role for much of the next decade, as national team opportunities proved difficult to come by. He racked up nearly 8,000 first-class runs in 127 matches for Delhi, before moving back to Jammu and Kashmir ahead of the 2015-16 Ranji season.
That was his last full season of first-class and List A cricket, but he played on for another year in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Manhas was also a regular in IPL squads too, and played 55 matches in the competition for Delhi Capitals (then Daredevils), Pune Warriors India and Chennai Super Kings.
Coaching and administrative roles
After retiring, Manhas went into coaching; his first role was assistant coach for Kings XI Punjab in the 2017 IPL, soon after former Delhi teammate Virender Sehwag was made head of cricket operations and strategy for the franchise. Later that year, he also served as a batting consultant for the Bangladesh U19 team – he previously had stints in the Dhaka Premier Division for Mohammedan Sporting Club and Abahani Ltd.
In 2019, Manhas joined RCB as assistant coach, where he linked up with two ex-Delhi teammates in bowling coach Ashish Nehra and captain Virat Kohli. Two years later, a BCCI committee took over affairs of the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA), until elections could be held in the organisation; Manhas was appointed to a sub-committee, his first administrative role, before he was made director of cricket operations for the JKCA.
When the Gujarat Titans IPL franchise was established ahead of the 2022 IPL season, Manhas was made assistant to head coach Ashish Nehra. Nehra is still with the team, but Manhas left his role ahead of the 2025 IPL, to be replaced by former Australia wicketkeeper Matthew Wade.
