Prithvi Shaw began his stint with Maharashtra on a strong note, scoring a century in his first outing for the side during the opening round of the 2025 Buchi Babu Trophy in Chennai on Tuesday.

Up against Chhattisgarh’s first-innings total of 252, Maharashtra’s openers Shaw and Sachin Dhas stitched together 71 runs for the opening wicket, in which the latter made just 10. Wickets kept falling at regular intervals, and the side was in trouble at 143 for five after Ruturaj Gaikwad was dismissed for one. Shaw, who hit four fours in the first three overs, however, kept going, bringing up his hundred in 122 deliveries with the help of 14 fours and a six. He was eventually dismissed for 111 off 141 balls with the team score at 166-6, having scored 67% of the team's runs.

Earlier in the match, Shaw had taken three outfield catches in what was his first competitive appearance since December 2024.

Shaw’s switch from Mumbai to Maharashtra

The 25-year-old moved to Maharashtra from Mumbai ahead of the season after being granted a no-objection certificate in June. “At this stage of my career, I believe joining the Maharashtra team will help me grow further as a cricketer,” Shaw had said while confirming the transfer in July, thanking the Mumbai Cricket Association for their support.

Shaw last represented India in July 2021 and has played five Tests, six ODIs and one T20I. He has so far scored 4,556 runs in 58 first-class matches at an average of 46.02, including 13 centuries and a highest score of 379. In List-A cricket, he has 3,399 runs at 55.72 with a strike rate of 125.74, while his T20 record stands at 2,902 runs at a strike rate of 151.54.

Touted as a future star, Shaw remained consistent for several seasons before form, fitness and disciplinary concerns saw him lose ground. He went unsold in the IPL 2025 auction and was left out of Mumbai’s squad midway through the 2024-25 domestic campaign.
