Prithvi Shaw set to play Buchi Babu tournament for Maharashtra

After making waves on the Mumbai school and then domestic circuits as an opening batter, Shaw led India to the U-19 World Cup title in 2018, with a squad containing current senior internationals Shubman Gill, Riyan Parag, Abhishek Sharma and Arshdeep Singh among others.

Tipped for greatness, Shaw debuted for India in October 2018 aged 18, and became the youngest India player to score a century on Test debut. He has nine Tests, six ODIs and one T20I to his name, but his last international came in July 2021.

After gradually falling out of favour with the national selectors, Shaw was also ignored in the latest IPL auction, before being dropped by Mumbai midway through the 2024-25 domestic season. Last month, he obtained an NOC (no-objection certificate) from the Mumbai Cricket Association to switch to Maharashtra.

He has now been picked for the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament, a multi-days competition hosted by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association which acts as preparation for the upcoming domestic season.

Maharashtra will be led by batter Ankeet Bawane, with India international and Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad also part of the squad. Arshin Kulkarni (Lucknow Super Giants), Ramakrishna Ghosh, Mukesh Choudhary and Rajvardhan Hangargekar (all Chennai Super Kings) are the other players with IPL contracts who have made the cut.

Maharashtra have been placed in Group A alongside the TNCA President's XI, Himachal Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. They will kick off their campaign against the latter at the Guru Nanak College Ground in Chennai.
