Six-capped India quick Shivam Mavi starred with bat and ball in his first match of the Uttar Pradesh T20 league season.
Shivam Mavi shines with all-round performance for Kashi Rudras
The third season of the UPT20 kicked off on August 17, as Meerut Mavericks beat Kanpur Superstars by 86 runs. The second game of the season was the first of a double-header on August 18, with Kashi Rudras facing off against Gaur Gorakhpur Lions.
Kashi skipper Karan Sharma chose to bat first in Lucknow, and himself took the early initiative with 39 off 19 balls at the top of the order. But a middle-order slide saw them go from 86-3 to 89-7 in the space of seven balls.
But then, Shivam Mavi and Shiva Singh rescued the innings with an eight-wicket stand of 87 in 37 balls. Mavi, who had come in at No.8, began to cut loose in the 17th over with a six off Abdul Rehman.
The following over, he hit Shivam Sharma for back-to-back sixes and then hit Rehman for two more in the 19th. Mavi got to a half-century off 19 balls with his sixth six, off Vasu Vats in the final over. He was dismissed off the final ball of the innings for 54 off 21, as Kashi made 176-8.
Mavi wasn't done yet, though. After bowling one over in the Powerplay, he returned to bowl three in the slog overs. Mavi struck in the 16th over to remove the set Akshdeep Nath for 34, and four balls later had Hardeep Singh caught for one. With the game already won by the time he came back in the final over, Mavi took the final wicket of Shivam Sharma, to finish with 3-24 and take home the player of the match award.

Ever since breaking out at the 2018 U19 World Cup, Mavi's career has been hampered by injury. He first played for India in 2023, taking 4-22 on debut against Sri Lanka. In six T20Is against Sri Lanka and New Zealand at home in the space of one month, he took seven wickets at 17.6, conceding 8.8 runs per over. He has not been picked for India since, and has not made an IPL appearance since 2022.
