Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has broken yet another record, this time smashing the fastest List A fifty ever scored.
After an under-par tri-series, including a controversial finish to a close encounter against Sri Lanka A, the 15-year-old came into his own in the final against the hosts in Dambulla, slamming the fastest List A fifty ever, off 11 deliveries, en route to a 29-ball 94. He would have equalled Jake Fraser-McGurk’s record of the quickest ton in the format (29 balls) had he scored a maximum off the delivery he was dismissed.
Sooryavanshi kicked off his knock with three consecutive fours and two sixes to get to 24 off five. A dot on his next delivery was followed by a sequence of six, four, four, six, six, four, four, two, four, during which he completed his half-century and bolted to 64 off 15. Three more sixes and two fours came off his next 13 balls, leaving him needing a six to match the quickest List-A ton record.
But it wasn’t to be as he was caught at mid-off. His whirlwind knock took India A to 132 in just 8.5 overs. Captain Tilak Varma scored his fourth half-century of the series, while Vipraj Nigam and Anukul Roy provided the finishing touches to take the side to 377-9.
