Taijul Islam overtook Shakib Al Hasan as Bangladesh’s top wicket-taker in Tests, while also becoming the first to 250 wickets in the format from the country.

The left-arm spinner began the two-Test series against Ireland nine wickets off Shakib Al Hasan’s then-record wickets tally of 246. To add to his five wickets in the first match, he registered four-wicket hauls in both the innings of the second Test to surpass Shakib’s tally and become the first Bangladesh bowler with 250 Test wickets.

Taijul Islam helps Bangladesh fashion a 2-0 sweep of Ireland

After an innings victory in the first match, riding on Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das’s centuries in the first innings, Bangladesh posted a solid total of 476. With the ball, Taijul showed the way, picking up four wickets to help bowl Ireland out for 265, and in the process equalled Shakib’s Test tally.

Bangladesh’s top order then came to the party, with the top three hitting half-centuries, and Mushfiqur adding a 50 for himself, to set the visitors a daunting 509 runs. Though Harry Tector (50) and Curtis Campher (71 not out) showed some resistance, Taijul once again emerged as his side’s top wicket-taker to take figures of 4-104 as the hosts won by 217 runs.

With eight wickets in the match, Taijul entered an elite list of bowlers with 250 Test wickets, and became the first from Bangladesh to do so.
